Key success contributors (Strategies):

  • Outreach

Our outreach strategy leverages trusted community leaders and the use of sports and social interactions as engaging platforms. Community leaders serve as change agents, hosting information sessions, and engaging, and mediating interventions.

We organize sports leagues, arts programs, and social programs to foster engagement and resilience.

Working with trusted and respected community leaders within the community helps us effectively reach and support hard-to-reach youth enabling the project to effectively directly engage with youth, community members, and their families.

Regular, community-focused events and activities help establish and maintain trust between program facilitators and participants. This is essential for the success of our programs, ensuring participants feel safe and supported.

Trauma-Informed Approaches: We recognize that participants may come from backgrounds of significant trauma and mistrust of institutions. Our program incorporates trauma-informed approaches and works to build trust gradually, similar to the need for understanding and addressing the trauma within the communities discussed in the research.

  • Addressing Multiple Facets:

Our approach integrates family support, quality activities for children and youth, youth-led social activities, and youth employment. This comprehensive support system ensures we address various aspects of participants’ lives, including economic opportunities, social support, and engagement with governance structures.

  • Engagement forums:

Through engagement forums, one-on-one interactions, and participatory research, with the community, we gain an understanding of the underlying motivations for youth engagement in violence.

Recognizing that economic, systemic, and social barriers contribute to gun violence, our program’s focus on employment support addresses a critical need. By addressing these root causes, we aim to create stability and reduce violence among racialized youth in Ottawa.

In summary, the project has been a successful intervention to help youth feel they can influence change nonviolently, encouraging youth to participate in community initiatives, and fostering a sense of ownership and agency.

  • Impact Evaluating

Our program includes robust evaluation methods to measure its impact on reducing support for violence and improving economic and social outcomes. This data helps us refine our programs and demonstrate their effectiveness to stakeholders and funde
